My latest feature for Palmer points out that the current occupant of the White House is hardly the first to go fishing in Palm Beach for foreign ambassadors. Florida’s Gold Coast has been seeding embassies with American envoys for more than a century, almost as long as the enclave has existed. Traditionally, they have been political appointees, as opposed to merit-based career diplomats (though some of the former have grown in their jobs). Only five percent of the current crop are career diplomats; the remainder are political according to the American Foreign Service Association: Familiarity with Mar-a-Lago apparently breeds anointment these days. Read the story to learn how things used to be. (Image: Guilford Dudley Jr. Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Denmark by Jack Nisberg / Condé Nast via Getty Images)
